Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2013

So it turns out that I have a bit of a crush on this wine. Pun intended I've tasted some really lovely wines from Au Bon Climat before, but they were the expensive, single vineyard, special selection and what have you wines. I don't think I've had their standard Pinot Noir until a couple of weeks ago and I'm quite pleased with it. I opened it to celebrate the first night of Shark Week. Yes, this is considered a holiday in the Yates home. It could have been my enthusiasm for the best week of the year to begin combined with the bursting fresh fruit flavors of the wine, but I was very excited about this Pinot Noir.

Au Bon Climat wines are made with Burgundian varietals (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) and the grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Central Coast region of California. This is generally a cooler area compared to many other wine regions in the state, so Pinot Noir and Chardonnay perform very well here. This particular wine is made with grapes from Santa Barbara. It showed vibrant and fresh notes of raspberry, strawberry, rose, nutmeg, and cinnamon on both the nose and palate. It had a slightly pungent, although not unpleasant, gamey note at first, which subsided to a delightful level of funk after the wine had been open for about 30 minutes. It has such a wonderful fruit character and a bright acidity, making it super easy to drink with just about anything.

I enjoyed this wine again last night and I must say, it's a great way to unwind from the day. Especially when your day consists of giving your toddler son a mini scone as a treat at breakfast and he then refuses to touch any food that isn't that scone for the rest of the day, sending him on a hunger induced rampage until bedtime. This incident is now referred to as Sconehenge and I won't be making that mistake again! What I will be doing again however, is buying this wine - this is going to be one that I keep stocked.

Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2013: Thumbs up! Definitely try it, perhaps with a scone. $19.99
